New Horizons

J and I are contemplating doing something we've never done before...purchase a new car.

It really goes against the very core of our beings (especially J's being) to buy a new car at a dealership. As soon as you drive it off the lot-splat-off comes thousands of dollars. We've always purchased our cars new, through auction or private party.

The winds though...they may be a changin'.

We are considering buying this car new:

What exactly is it, you ask? A Mazda 5. It's not quite a minivan, yet it's more than a wagon. Not in length-it's actually 3 inches shorter than my Passat wagon. It has the head room of a minivan, plus sliding doors. It has 3 rows of seats, seating a total of 6. Yet, it drives like a sedan.

It doesn't have the space of a minivan. When that third row is up, you have NO cargo room in the back. And it isn't quite as easy to pass back to that 3rd row, since it's not as wide as a van. And it doesn't have the cool, high-tech features minivan owners gloat about-remote doors and hatch, DVD player, seats and can be shifted or removed, a dance floor with disco ball in the back...nothing like that. It's much more on the basic end of the spectrum. The techiest feature is a built in navigation system, which we don't want, anyway. So, a minivan this little guy is not.

But really? Not sure I want a big minivan, anyway. And this thing is pretty fun to drive. Yesterday the dealership allowed us to borrow it for the day. We piled everyone in except the dogs and went to the duck pond and the coffee shop. I took it grocery shopping and on and off the freeway. It handles well, it fits in our garage, and it has 6 seats. All pluses. It's not that cute. Some have called it ugly. I personally found that it grew on me. I was a bit sad to bring it back at the end of the day.

So, we'll let you know. We still haven't ruled out a traditional minivan, but I think something drastic would have to happen to strongly consider that possibility right now. (Like suddenly finding out we were pregnant with twins. We're not...pregnant or otherwise.) But who knows.

Zoom Zoom Zoom.

Personally, I think the disco ball in the back would be right up our alley.

Right?

Or, if you had a navigation system you could get rid of the one million maps in your car.

Hahaha.

But all that is depending on J actually buying a new car. And you surviving the heart attack that would inevitably follow.

Your financial advisor frowns upon this kind of talk. think of the compounded interest you could earn with that money over a 30 year period. :-) do your kids actually need leg room as they grow up? do they need room for friends? btw, if Mindy has a girl can we steal some of kate's old clothes. :-)

Our Pilot doesn't have much cargo space with the 3rd row of seats up, either. But the head room is nice. I don't bonk the kids heads on the ceiling of the car nearly as much!

I wasn't ready for a minivan, either. I like them, but I may never be ready to call one mine!
